Now that we knitted to 2 inches before our toe we are going to start decreasing. Just like we did in the gusset decreases only we are decreasing 4 times instead of two.
Section 1: Knit to the last 3 stitches do a knit 2 together and knit the last stitch
Section 2: Knit 1 stitch, knit to the last 3 stitches do a knit 2 together and knit the last stitch
Section 3: Knit one stitch slip slip knit, and knit the rest.
After every decrease row you want to knit a row in between.
My magic number is 40 transfer them to the DPNs. 20 on each needle
KITCHENER STITCH:
The easiest way for me to explain this is to take a darning needle and break about 18” of yarn from your ball. Thread the darning needle making sure your yarn is on the back right hand side.
I always carry this image with me while Kitchenering my socks

Sock tutorial (heel turn and picking up gusset posted)
I have to tell you when I started knitting socks which was not that long ago the thought of picking up stitches was scary and I thought I could not do it. But you can! (I use a 9” circular to pick up the gusset, because I don’t like ladders in my work from the DPN’s, also don’t forget to put your point protector on the other end of your 9” so your stitches dont fall off )
This is where we connect the heel with the instep. Your working yarn when you are finished with your heel turn should be on the right side. Mine looks like this:
Insert your 9” circular into the first stitch below your DPN and knit that stitch. Continue this way all the way down until you reach the other DPN.
Place a stitch marker before you start knitting across your DPN.
Place a stitch marker and pick up the other side of your gusset.
Now that you are back to your original DPN you are going to knit half (9) of your stitches from the needle and slip the other 9 knit wise to your left needle. Place a stitch marker. (After this I usually knit a round before I start my gusset decreases.)
Congratulations you picked up your gusset! The picture below is what your needles should look like.
GUSSET DECREASES:
Now that you have knit a row on your gusset decreases We are going to decrease 2 sections until we get the number of stitches we casted on with.
Section 1: You want to knit to the last 3 stitches do a k2tog and knit the last stitch
Section 2: You want to knit across (this is the top of your foot)
Section 3: You want to knit 1 stitch and then do an ssk knit the rest of your stitches.
And after you reach your original stitch marker you want to knit a row between your decreases.
After you get down to your original number of stitches you casted on with (64) you want to knit to 2 inches before your toe (example: I wear a size 10, so I will knit to 8 inches)
A heel turn is a series of short row heels worked our from the center of your work every time you are going to add one more stitch to your work until you have a turned heel.
You are going to slip one and purl one past center and have (17) stitches on your right needle.
(32/2=16 16+1=17)
Purl 2 together and then purl 1 turn your work (trust me it will work out)
Count your stitches on your right needle You are going to want to make sure you end up equally on your left needle the same as your right (12 stitches on your right)
Slip one stitch You are going to after that do an ssk (take your right needle and slip purlwise two stitches, insert your left needle into those two stitches on your right needle and slip them over) and knit one stitch.
Turn your work.
If you stretch your stitches out you will see a gap. (This is what you want!)
Purl to the gap
Purl 2 together
purl 1
turn your work
You will have 10 stitches on your right needle when you turn your work (I usually count 10 stitches on my left needle and you are going to include a ssk and a knit one so you have 13 stitches to count)
Knit to the gap
ssk
knit 1
turn your work
Continue this process until you reach 2 stitches on your left needle on the purl side you are going to purl 2 together and on the knit side you want to knit 2 together.
Now we are going to transfer stitches to the DPN (this will be the front needle) Putting your needle into the first stitch purl wise continue till you have 32 stitches on the DPN.
Now that you have 32 on your first DPN go ahead and transfer to your second DPN. (Your 9″ will be in a crescent shape)
You should have your stitches on 2 DPNs with 32 stitches front and back needle. Notice your working yarn is on the back needle.
Put point protectors on your front needle so your stitches don’t slip off. (I use point protectors on the opposite needle where your working yarn is)
Put your 9” circular aside we will be working back and forth on the back needle for 30 rows now.
(I prefer to do my heel flap on 2 DPNs where it is less fiddly.)
HEEL FLAP:
Step 1: Take a 3rd DPN where your working yarn is and knit your first stitch after that you want start purling across on the wrong side slip your last stitch as if to purl. Once you are about 8 rows in it will look like this (This is the inside of your sock)
Step 2: Knit the first stitch, slip the next stitch purl wise, you will continue until the end of the row, bringing your working yarn to the front and ending with a slipped stitch Once you are about 8 rows in it will look like this. (This is the outside of your sock)
Continue until you have 30 rows and slip the last stitch and turn your work. So you have the Purl side facing you. (Its ok if your sides are curling, you will pick those up soon)
This next picture is your (Public Side) of your work
I am a past crocheter, a medium loom knitter, and an avid needle knitter now. I often have an assistant who is sitting beside me when I am knitting or blogging by the name of “buddy” hes 3.5 and 1 out of the 4 loves of my life. I started crocheting in my early 20’s when my grandmother got sick and we had to put her in a home I would often spend afternoons with her crocheting. (Usually I was crocheting she was watching.) I was on and off quite a bit taking a hiatus here and there until I got engaged and married in 2009. I wanted to learn more crocheting so my husband bought me “the happy hooker” I never really got outside of making scarves but I wanted to make much more then scarves.
After the birth of “buddy” in late 2010. I suffered through a bout of post par tum depression. My mother and I were walking through Michael’s one day and we saw the knifty knitter looms. After my mother returned from visiting me to California my mother-in-law and I sat at her dining room table figuring the “loom” thing out. We got it! Didn’t know at the time we can go on you tube to figure it out. Finally the following summer wanting to know more I searched you tube and that’s where I blossomed figuring out stitches and cool new things to try.
Last fall, I was curious, a little burned out from the loom thing so I thought I would try needle knitting. My best friend has taught herself so I took a dive I went on you tube again and watched over and over again how to in thee basics of knitting and one day it finally clicked. So I am an avid needle knitter now. I learn so much off of new stitch a day.com and everyone else.
When I am not knitting you can sometimes find me at the Red Brick Bakery in Red Lion, PA – Nerding out to Knitting Podcasts, or shopping I like to do alot of it.
I am knitting socks I decided to share along with you how I knit my ankle socks. My way I prefer to make them 2 at a time (on 2 different needles, doing one section simultaneously after another example: cuff on first sock put that down and do the cuff on the second sock) splitting a ball into 2 50g balls of yarn. (I use a kitchen scale and a yarn winder) You can change it around if you like and you don’t have to use a scale if you don’t have one. I wear a size 10 shoe
Rainah’s Ankle Sock Recipe
Your Skein of sock yarn (NEW Opal 8861 Best Friends Zusammenhalt is what I am using)
You will need: 9” circular needle
Size 3 DPNs
Point Protectors
Stitch Markers
Cast on 64 stitches on your 9” circular needle. (I use the long tail cast on)
Placing a stitch marker where you began your count and join in the round.
You want to knit your cuff in a k2p2 rib pattern for 8 rows
Do stockinette (knit stitch) for 15 rows
After you are finished slip your stitch marker over and turn turn your needles so they are facing you flat like the picture above and put a point protector on the side the stitch marker is on.
